Sker House is a historic building in Wales and can be seen from the Northern windows in the apartment. Originally built as a monastic grange of the Cistercian order over 900 years ago. The house was made famous as the basis of R. D. Blackmore's book The Maid of Sker. The original house had a single storey but in the late sixteenth century, under the ownership of Jenkin Turberville, substantial rebuilding took place, probably retaining the layout of the original building. The house now became a gaunt grey three-storey building with attics. The east wing had two large, symmetrically arranged turrets, where the main doors were and through which all the storeys could be accessed. The west wing had several more randomly placed turrets and towers, one of which housed a staircase to all floors. It is a Grade I listed building, and Cadw describes it as "one of the major Elizabethan houses of South Wales". It’s the subject of many ghost stories around Porthcawl, look at our Hauntings section to read more about it. It is easy to walk to see along the coastal path right of The Rest towards Kenfig National Park.

Pink Bay is something of a hidden Porthcawl gem, very popular with local walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and surfers. It has a steep pebble bank leading down to the golden sands. The rocks at the top of the beach have a unique pink marbling effect in a certain light, hence the name Pink Bay. This beach is accessible via a 15-minute walk from Rest Bay along a boardwalk adjacent to the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club; it is a rural beach and as such has no toilets or other amenities. A monument to the crew of the Mumbles Lifeboat and the SS Samtampa – a 7,000 ton wrecked steamship - is visible at low tide on nearby Sker point. The advantage of this beach is that dogs are allowed all year round.
