Be prepared! Bring water, proper footwear, hats, and layers for both warm and cold conditions on the mountain. Wool sweaters, rain jackets and / or winter coats that can be removed are useful depending on when you are visiting. Mount Rainier creates its own weather and weather changes can occur swiftly. Always be prepared!
It’s a popular destination. On summer weekends, the line to get into Mt. Rainier NP can literally be hours long. Arrive early (9-10 am) to avoid waiting and to get parking! This same traffic can also impact your ability to get to the cabin (coming east on 706) since The Red Chalet is so close to the Nisqually entrance to the park, so plan accordingly to avoid being stuck in traffic. Traffic will usually clear out between 2-4 pm on the busiest days.
Check current weather and road conditions, view Paradise from NPS webcams and learn about activities or closures. Things are subject to change in the park, especially in the winter.
From November 1 - May 1, you must have tire chains in your car when visiting Mt. Rainier NP. (Yes, even if you have 4 wheel drive or drive a Subaru!). If you don’t have chains, you can rent them at:
