The view from Hawksbill Mountain is one of the best in the Shenandoah National Park, with two lookout areas near the summit. This is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, and the rocky lookout area at the top clears the way for scenic views, with no vegetation to block the vista. The trail begins at the Upper Hawksbill parking area at milepost 46.7 and leads up to the summit, covering 2.1 miles round-trip. The ground is even and follows a fire road part of the way, making it suitable for most hikers. This is a great late afternoon hike that typically takes about 1.5 hours to complete.

This is the most popular hiking trail in the Shenandoah National Park and it is always recommended by park staff. This is a short 1.4-mile return hike that is suitable for almost everyone and one of the best hikes in Shenandoah National Park for families. Total hike time varies, but hikers should plan for 1.5 hours. Dog friendly! Especially if they love to get a little wet.

The panoramic vista from Little Schloss is spectacular, however the rock scramble to to the summit does require some skill. This is one of the more popular hikes here in Shenandoah County! Dogs are allowed, but the final rock scramble will be a challenge with a dog.

Big Schloss is another treasure in the George Washington National Forest. Relatively easy at only 4.4 miles and 1,000 vertical feet. One of our favorites! Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. The first half mile or so is a steep incline but after that it's smooth sailing. Great views of both Virginia and West Virginia.
