Food scene

In the middle of the town. A lot of good wines, canned fish and no ventilation :) it smells food, like it should! No reservations and DJs in the weekend. Go for the food, stay for the vibe!

Bring your dinner jacket and get ready for the best (and the most expensive) chocolate with whipped cream you’ve ever had. The perfect winter activity in central oslo!

I’m sure you’ll head down to Bjørvika sometime during your stay, to check you the Munch museum or just have a stroll by the water. If you do, why not stop for lunch at Mike’s corner? Awesome sandwiches and run by the friendliest guy in town.

I'm not lying: This is the best pizza in the world. It's random that it happens to be in Oslo but it doesn't make it untrue. Try it!! (Watch out for somewhat limited opening hours!)

Last summer’s favorite wine bar. You won’t get a more young and hip Oslo vibe than this. Sit outside, and watch the young Grünerløkka crowds. If you didn’t know; Grünerløkka is Oslo’s best try at being SoHo. Anyway; try the anchovies toast and ask for some Czech natural wine. Last summer everyone in Oslo started drinking Czech wine, don’t ask me why :)

If you like oysters you’ll love eff eff. This area is also worth exploring in general. Very young and hip, and probably not on your tourist map. Eff Eff is right next to one of my other recommendations , Nektar. Also have a look at Coffee and cigarettes right next door for a cocktail if you’re in the mood.

If it’s cold out, why not get some ramen? This place is seriously good. Moisty windows, beers and an authentic vibe. It’s maybe a little bit off the beaten track, but you could explore Mathallen at the same time, oslos lovely food court which is right next by. Or head down to Blå (you’ll find it in this guide) and walk back along the river to the apartment.

This is a gem. Hot, steamy and packed with Oslo 20 somethings. Used to be (and still is!) a place for the elderly locals to drink daytime beer. But then a critic tried the food menu. After every single Oslo newspaper gave them top score within a year, it’s now a bit tricky to get a table, so you have to call in advance. Make sure to ask for the red menu (if you look like a tourist they sometimes still hand you the regular one.)

New favorite special occasion dinner spot. French bistro type place, utterly amazing food and great atmosphere. For me, this is the best restaurant in Oslo right now.

Every few months a new favorite dinner spot pops up in Oslo. This winter it’s been this little place that’s been attracting attention. It has a pop up kind of vibe and a very friendly atmosphere, not the highest prices and above all some insanely good food. The crew behind this gem also have a place in Torshov called Bente, which apparently is even better but I haven’t been yet so I can’t include it in the guide just yet :-)

Coffee

Tim Wendelboe on Grünerløkka is well worth a visit. Tim has done quite a bit for the modern coffee scene, and some would say it’s the most renowned coffee bar in the world. Try the iced cappuccino!

This gem is a really good starting point for your exploration of Grünerløkka, as it sits right on the top. You can get there by a tram to Birkelunden. Grab a coffee and start your journey back south.

A favorite spot in a part of town you should check out; St. Hanshaugen. This is where the hipsters of Oslo move when they grow up. Grab a coffee and have a walk around the park, look out for strollers!

Sightseeing

The Munch museum is a really good starting place to explore Bjørvika, the city’s new borough. Both Mikes corner and Vandelay (restaurants in my guide) are located here.

The city river, diving the east and the west, our own little Berlin Wall? Used to be the beating heart of the city as this was where all the industry was located. I’ve heard that the reason the rich lived on the west side is because the prevailing winds were blowing eastwards, so they didn’t get the smell. Now the river has been given a lot of love over the years, and it gives you a beautiful walk down in the middle of the city. Have a look at Blå, The infamous nightclub. It also stops by Mathallen, the food court. And you can walk it up to the top of Grünerløkka and take Markveien back, to get the full experience. The river continues all the way up to Maridalsvannet, where we get our drinking water! Before that comes Frysja, where you can swim!

Walk the roof of the opera! This is a really nice way to get an overlook over the city and understand it’s geography. Oslo is like a fan, with the opera down in the middle, and the city fanning up from there, with the river dividing the fan in the middle.

When summer comes, this is where people in Oslo go to cool down on hot days. Have a swim or walk the paths of Bygdøy! A buss will get you out there.

Nightlife

If you’re here on a Sunday, see Frank Znort and their jazz musicians at Blå, and mix in with an Oslo crowd of all ages, where at least a quarter of the audience (the younger quarter!) will be there for their first time, equally as amazed as you. You’ll not get a more local recommendation than this…
