Parks & Nature

Here are some of our favourite places to enjoy the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Just a 10 minute drive away, this National Trust property with beautiful parkland designed by 'Capability Brown' with Folly, and woodland walk (Cobbs Wood) is a great day's entertainment. Also, next door is Home Farm, which is an extra cost, but a treat to see Shire horses, and rare bread: pigs, goats, chickens, cattle and sheep around the farm.

Beautiful woodland walk, just a 25 minute drive into Bedfordshire. The Lodge Nature Reserve and Gardens is a very special place, offering an exceptionally rich combination of wildlife and heritage experiences. The woodland, heath and acid grassland here cover an area of some 220 hectares, and now form the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire.

Welney Wetland Centre ( managed by Wildfowl & Wetland Trust) is very special place for bird watching & wetland walks. Located 45 mins drive north into the Fenland; amazingly still in the county... but only just! This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest stretching from near St Ives in Cambridgeshire to Downham Market in Norfolk. It is the setting for one of the most magical events in the UK’s nature calendar - mass winter gatherings of many thousands of wild ducks, geese and swans. But also throughout the year: Avocets, Marsh Harrier and Bewick Swans. Visit their website to plan a visit, there's lots to see and do ( guided walks may be booked in advance).

Hot tubs under the sky: great fun to share with friends and family. Closed for August; surprising, I know... but they are open for all other 11 months! It is a great fun open air experience with: hot tubs, plunge pool and sauna... and then there's a cafe for afterwards.

The best way to view the famous backs of the colleges. A trip on a punt along the river Cam is entertaining, interesting and enjoyable way to see 'The Backs'. Either chauffeured or... even better punt yourself; most people get the hang of it after a few practise manoeuvres!

Cambridge has plenty of good pubs and beer. The Pint Shop generally has the most impressive beers, across 23 lines, and is situated in the centre, just off the Market (Brewdog will soon be opening a few doors down). The two main areas by the river are also well served – from Quayside, where the Punt Yard bar recently opened, the Maypole is only a couple of minutes away, tucked behind Bridge Street and the Park Street car park, and has a great selection, probably the largest beer selection in Cambridge, while the Mill overlooks the other end of the river and mill pond by Silver Street – probably the best place to take a beer outside in good weather. Take a look at the Cambridge Pub Guide for more places to visit for a good pint in a traditional british pub...

Amazing fossil museum with an impressive iguanodon skeleton. The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences is the oldest of the University of Cambridge museums, having been established in 1728 as the Woodwardian Museum. Since then the collection has grown from about 10,000 fossils, minerals and rocks, to at least 2 million. A walk through the museum will take you on a 4.5 billion year journey through time, from the meteoritic building blocks of planets, to the thousands of fossils of animals and plants that illustrate the evolution of life in the oceans, on land and in the air.

This a bit further a field (50 mins in to Essex), but what a place ...on a good weather day! A lovely open space to explore with enormous and fascinating sculptures that you can go right right up to and touch, lean against or even stand underneath! Also, Moore's family home, Hoglands is an intriguing place; frozen in time from the 60's. If you'd like to look round the house, be sure to book a ticket on arrival to bagsy your time slot. Take a picnic or eat in the local pub.
