Upnor Castle is a fort on the river Medway. It is run by English Heritage and is on Upnor High St which is a very charming cobbled st. Fort with tranquil grounds adjoining a riverside village with coin rubbing and canon firing. Address: High St, Upnor, Rochester ME2 4XG Phone:0370 333 1181 Hours: 10am–6pm Situated on the banks of the River Medway, this attractive turreted castle is set in a picturesque village area backed by rolling, wooded hills. Upnor Castle was originally built on the orders of Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 as a gun fort to defend her warships at anchor in the reaches of the Medway and Chatham Dockyard. Although the castle was an important link in the defence line, it was not well maintained and proved ineffective when the Dutch, under the command of Admiral de Ruyter, sailed up the Medway in June 1667 to attack the dockyard. The enemy fleet met very little resistance and when it left two days later, it had destroyed or captured a large number of the Royal Navy ships anchored at Chatham. An audio-visual interpretation in English and Dutch tells the story of this raid in graphic manner, showing how the enemy ships breached the river defences, sailing on up the river to destroy much of the British fleet. The gatehouse and main body of the castle are open for viewing and for a nominal charge. A sound wand interpretation for a personal guided tour of the site is available in English, French and Dutch for a nominal charge of £1.

A large castle run by English Heritage. Strategically placed astride the London Road, guarding an important crossing of the River Medway, this imposing fortress has a complex history of destruction and rebuilding. Today it stands as a proud reminder of the history of Rochester along with the cathedral and cobbled streets. Its Norman tower-keep of Kentish ragstone was built about 1127 by William of Corbeil, Archbishop of Canterbury, with the encouragement of Henry I. Consisting of three floors above a basement, it still stands 113 feet high. Attached is a tall protruding forebuilding, with its own set of defences to pass through before the keep itself could be entered at first floor level. In 1215, garrisoned by rebel barons, the castle endured an epic siege by King John. Having first undermined the outer wall, John used the fat of 40 pigs to fire a mine under the keep, bringing its southern corner crashing down. Even then the defenders held on, until they were eventually starved out after resisting for two months. Rebuilt under Henry III and Edward I, the castle remained as a viable fortress until the sixteenth century. Look out for Volunteering opportunities at historic sites in Medway. Lovely park with walks and an adventure playground for the children. One of the most popular country parks in Kent, Shorne Woods Country Park offers everything you need to spend a day enjoying the great outdoors. The site includes the eco-friendly visitor centre and café, a sensory garden, orienteering, fishing lakes, a trim trail and picnic and play areas – not to mention to 292 acres of rolling woodlands, wetlands and meadows that can be explored via a variety of waymarked trails. A lot of effort has gone into making the park as accessible as possible – electric 'Tramper' mobility vehicles are available for hire, while there's a special horse riding and cycle path route around the site. There are a number of other colour-coded waymarked trails too, ranging in length from the 1 mile Easy Route to the 6.2 mile Darnley Trail that also takes in the nearby Jeskyns and Cobham Wood sites. Hosting educational programmes throughout the year, Shorne Woods offers lots of opportunities to learn about the nature and wildlife at the park. It is one of the few places in South East England to provide Forest Schools. With a unique space and meeting room for hire, Shorne Woods Country Park is also an excellent venue for everything from business meetings and workshops, to birthdays and club meetings. Capstone Farm Country Park

Capstone Farm Country Park is in Chatham, Kent, Medway, in Kent, England. A former farm converted into a landscaped park and open-space area. This park is set on 114 hectares of converted farm land, on the North Downs, near Walderslade. The park is set within Capstone valley, between Hempstead and Walderslade. The valley has been used by human use since the Neolithic period, according to the various archaeological finds in the area. There were originally four large farms in the Walderslade and surrounding areas, including Walderslade Farm, Settingdon Farm, Shawstead Farm and Gibralter Farm (the last two farms still exist). Shawstead Farm (and probably others nearby) were associated with the clearance of local woodland, in 1765 to help supply Chatham Dockyard with oak for the building of wooden sailing ships, launched at Chatham. Most of the larger and more valuable oak trees would have existed in the richer soil of the valley bottoms (Walderslade, Shawstead etc.) where the farms were typically located.[2] Ruins of Upper Shawstead Farm Much of the current park boundaries used to belong to the farm of Shawstead Manor.[3] The ruins of Upper Shawstead Farm are still within the boundary of the Park.[4] In 1376, Robert Belknapp was forced to give the manor to the Prior and Convent of Rochester to King Edward III, in atonement for certain misdemeanours. The land then remained in the ownership of the church, latterly the Church Commissioners in Canterbury, until 1928. During this time the land was rented out to local farmers, including the Crittendens, but the woodlands were managed by the Church Commissioners.[1] In the 16th century, a Beacon was erected on the site for military warning and use for cavalry manoeuvres. In 1928, Chatham Council bought the land but it continued to be leased to a local farmer until 1984 when it was opened as a Country Park for Medway Council. Part of the site continues to be farmed by the Wills family (local farmers) who took on the agricultural tenancy in 1951.[1] In 1985, the council stopped using the Shawstead landfill site (which has been in use since 1937), this has made more land for the country park, to the west of the park, mainly newly planted woodlands.

A fascinating local history museum for Medway, housed in two historic buildings. The Guildhall Museum is a fun place where visitors can discover the history of Rochester and Medway in a museum for all the family. Colourful and attractive displays in two stunning historic buildings feature the local, social and maritime history of Medway. Highlights of the museum include the beautiful ornate 17th century Guildhall Chambers, a walk-through part reconstruction of a Medway prison hulk on three deck levels, the Charles Dickens Discovery room, a fully furnished reconstructed Victorian Drawing Room and the world famous 18th century Seaton Tool chest which belonged to Benjamin Seaton of Chatham. Admission to the museum is FREE The Rochester Guildhall was built in 1687 and is one of the finest 17th-century civic buildings in Kent. Welcome Restoration House as we see it today is the amalgamation of two medieval buildings which were combined in the late 16th or early 17th century to create a mansion house just outside the south east corner of the city wall Restoration House is a unique survival of a city mansion. Situated in the heart of historic Rochester (England) the house takes it’s name from the stay of King Charles II on the eve of the Restoration. It is also the Satis House of Dickens’ “Great Expectations”, the home of Miss Havisham.Really wonderful gem tucked away in a side street. Has a large and wonderful garden, a tea room and a fantastic museum. The House Restoration House as we see it today is the amalgamation of two medieval buildings which were combined in the late 16th or early 17th century to create a mansion house just outside the south east corner of the city wall of Rochester. It was neither a town house nor a country seat but shared features of both, not least being the political seat of its creator and first owner Henry Clerke. Henry Clerke and his son Francis, both ambitious lawyers, were both elected several times as Royalist members of Parliament for Rochester. The Civil War during the 1640’s led to this property, which was central to their political effectiveness, being sequestered and occupied by Colonel Gibbon, Cromwell’s commander in the South East. However with the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the weakness of his son, Royalist forces began plotting to restore the deposed King’s son, Charles Stuart, exiled in France and Holland, back onto the throne. From early 1660 plans were advancing and Rochester being the only crossing of the Medway on the road from Dover to London was a strategic consideration, more so with a large part of the nation’s fleet, much expanded under Cromwell, being moored at Chatham Dockyard nearby. The mansion in the ownership of Royalist Francis Clerke and presumably with the cooperation of Colonel Gibbon, was fitted up to receive the young Charles and to act as his overnight base in Rochester, an important stage on his progress to London. With Charles were his two younger brothers the Dukes of York and Gloucester. Over the past ten years the present owners of Restoration House have uncovered various parts of the decorative scheme which they believe were “run up” for the occasion. These provide fascinating examples of fashionable mid-17th century Continental taste seen through provincial eyes at a time when such innovations had been quashed by Cromwell. Thus the use of ‘French Grey’ paint, of paint effect ‘marbling’ and ‘japanning’, of the opening up of rooms through ‘French doors’ cut into earlier partitions were not only introduced for Charles’ reception but have miraculously survived under later layers to be now once more revealed. The Garden Restoration House has an unusually large walled garden of some ¾ of an acre, the same extent as in the 1864 OS map. This is an unexpected haven just 100 yards off the old High St. As well as boundary walls the garden is divided length ways by a central brick wall itself pierced with archways and a formal pond connecting the two parts. These two parts are made up of formal and productive areas. A large boxwood parterre dominates the Southern garden flanked by an herbaceous border and a picturesque half sunk green house roofed in glass scales, while opposite a long shrubbery nestles in the shade of the wall. An upper lawn sweeps back towards the house with a mixed border of intricate planting. Between these the level drops to a long Portland stone pond, its balustrade over hung with fruiting quinces, adjacent to which is an established Muscat vine. Walking through a brick archway one can enter an enclosed Cutting garden which supplies the house with flowers for arrangements. A vegetable garden and second green house close the eastern vista. Walking back towards the house the level expanse of Yew Court, the topiary on one side cast long shadows, while in an opening of the hedges on the other side entry is gained into a flourishing Mediterranean pot garden with giant Echiums and Citrus under swags of Wisteria. The garden as it stands has been created over the past decade incorporating mature trees and archaeological features. Reclaimed local materials and traditional building skills and possibly most important of all, lime mortar, have been used throughout. The garden is maintained to the utmost and continues to be developed by a dedicated team of gardeners and craftsmen. Opening Times 26th May to 30th September 2016. Temple Manor

A tiny restored house tucked away on an industrial estate and open weekends. This place is an undiscovered gem. Free Entry Open weekends, 11am-4pm, from April until November Address: Rochester, Kent ME2 2AH Temple Manor was built in the 13th century by the Knights Templar, a military and religious order founded during the Crusades. Located to the west of the River Medway, the hall was designed to provide lodging for dignitaries travelling between Dover and London. Now standing in an industrial estate, the manor is a fine example of a medieval building and includes fascinating traces of wall paintings in the first floor hall. A leafy garden provides a fitting setting for the property. Description The hall is an impressive two-storey flint and stone structure consisting of a first-floor chamber supported by a fine undercroft, or vaulted cellar. Brick extensions were added at each end in the 17th century. The ornate chamber was used by the knights for both residential and business purposes. The main doorway has Purbeck marble shafts to either side and complex carved mouldings. The walls are of flint rubble but were originally plastered and painted to simulate smooth stone. The upper floor was reached via an external stair, which was reconstructed in the 1950s. In the 17th century a fireplace was inserted into the chamber at its eastern end. Archaeological excavation has revealed that a timber hall was added to the north side of this building in the early 14th century and that further buildings were constructed in the 15th century. No trace of these remains today.
