Neighborhoods

Our Thayer-B House is one of Richland’s “alphabet houses.” These are the homes that the US government started building in 1943 to house the thousands of workers that were brought to the area to work on the Manhattan Project at the Hanford site during World War II. The architect, G. Albin Pherson, was given less than 90 days to completely design the entire new Richland community, including streets, utilities, and commercial and residential building plans. Each housing design was assigned an alphabet letter designation and included single-family homes, duplexes, apartments, and dormitories. There’s no special meaning behind the lettering; each floor plan was named after a letter of the alphabet. As a result, they’re called “alphabet houses.” These homes have since maintained a distinct uniformity. Since about 1958, the alphabet house have been privately owned and customized in a variety of ways. Today they are used as both private residences and rentals. Ours is a B-House duplex which is one of the over 20 alphabet houses. The Merrill Court signage also on our property commemorates one of the Manhatten Project construction engineers.
