One of the best pizzerias in town. The secret is the dough - it's one of the few places in Vancouver that achieves the chewy 'mochi-mochi' texture that characterises true Napoletana-style pizzas. Also because it's only 3 blocks from our place :-)

No-nonsense Indian fare - as hole-in-the-wall as you can get in Vancouver. My son swears by Riaz's Chicken Saag and Garlic Naan. If he had his way, he would be going there every single day (it's that good).

Why do you come to Vancouver? For the best Hong Kong-style Chinese food of course! Deer Garden is as good as it gets. It's signature 'dish' is a piping hot bowl of noodles in fish broth. And no, the broth is not fishy at all, and you'll swear it doesn't have any fish in it (it does). It has several locations, and the Fraser Street branch is the one closest to our place.

Likely one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets, Hida Takayama Ramen is a no-frills experience for Ramen purists. Located inside the Robson Square Market, this little gem is the only ramen restaurant in the city who makes their noodles in house with premium-grade Ramen flour imported from Japan. Their broth takes three days to prepare, and contains no MSG. The Chashu (pork slices) here is generously portioned, super-delicious, and tender.

Consistently good and fast, and they open 24 hours. The owners Jim and Judy are extremely friendly, but they're only there during day time on weekdays ;-)

You make your own meal at your personal induction cooking station - perfect for a cold, rainy day... Or any day really. Our kids love the experience and it's one of their favourite restaurants. May seem pricey because tips are already included in the price.

If Hida Takayama Ramen is the best-kept secret in town, then Santouka is the worst-kept secret. It's Hokkaido-style shio ramen, with it's creamy tonkotsu broth bursting with umami, is hands down the best in Vancouver (don't forget to ask for the vinegar).

Don't get suckered into paying to walk across a suspension bridge - this one is where the locals go and is completely free! Plus, a 10-minute gentle hike from the suspension bridge brings you to the 30-Foot Pool, a favourite summer hang-out that is guaranteed to make you lose track of time.

A Vancouver icon, Stanley Park offers a scenic seawall, 3 beaches, a swimming pool, and a spray park for family fun. If you don't mind spending money, the Vancouver Aquarium is a great place to spend the day (and to learn a thing or two about aquatic creatures). During summer Stanley Park also features Tuesday evening drum circles at 3rd Beach and outdoor movie nights at 2nd Beach.

Entertainment & Activities

A former industrial wasteland, Granville Island is now a prime tourist spot even the locals cannot resist. It has a public market (based on the Pike Place Market concept in Seattle), artist studios, unique local shops, busker performances, and a free spray park with a giant slide for kids.

Search for 平民夜總會 (meaning "poor people's nightclub") in Google and you'll find pictures of Temple Street in Hong Kong, and that's pretty much what the Richmond Night Market is. This is where you'll meet the next ShamWow guy, find cheap knock-offs, and covet the most kawaii cover for your latest iPhone. Did I mention it's also a street-food heaven? Do yourself a favour and go with an empty stomach.

Sightseeing

Don't let the name fool you - the Chinatown in Vancouver has become as diverse and multi-cultural as Canada itself. Yes, you can still find the traditional herbal shops, vegetable markets, and merchants selling Chinese curios. It's also home to the iconic Phnom Penh restaurant, New Town Bakery, and the one and only Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Garden. However, thanks to gentrification, you can also find the hippest, trendiest cafés (Matchsticks, Propaganda, etc.), dessert joints (Crackle Crème), and restaurants (The Ramen's Butcher, Bao Bei, etc.)
