The Zugliget Chairlift (Libegő) is a fun, alternative mode of transport in the Buda hills. Transporting passengers between Zugliget and the road leading up to the Erzsébet Lookout Tower, the Chairlift takes you calmly up the side of János Hill in about 15 minutes – while providing panoramic views of the Buda surroundings.

The pedestrianised waterside walkway between Chain Bridge and Elizabeth Bridge is called Danube Promenade (Duna-korzó). Once the scene of elegant passeggiatas either side of World War I, the promenade changed character with the building of imposing chain hotels from the 1960s onwards. Today these five-star lodgings, the InterContinental, the Marriott and the Sofitel, define the skyline, their upscale restaurants and bars offering superb views of the Danube, its bridges and Buda beyond. For pedestrians, the Duna-korzó remains one of the best strolls in the city, lined with benches and statues such as the Kiskirálylány (‘The Princess’) sitting on a railing. Alongside runs tram 2, whose passengers enjoy one of the finest slices of cityscape, past the ornate Vigadó theatre and the main departure point for sightseeing and regularly scheduled city-transport boats. The Duna-korzó is also the perfect vantage point to take in the firework displays of August 20th and New Year’s Eve as colours explode across the Danube.

Connecting the Danube bank with the Castle Hill, the Funicular (Sikló) was first put into service in 1870. Back then, it carried clerks and public officials up to do a day’s work in Buda Castle. Destroyed during the war, it wasn’t restored until 1986, when it was given a vintage appearance and soon admitted to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites as a distinctive element of the Danube embankment. It runs on a steep, 95-metre slope, elevating 50 metres along its way.

Andrássy út is Budapest’s own Champs-Élysées, a showcase boulevard of significant institutions, embassies, high-end boutiques and villas. Andrássy út, meanwhile, can be divided into three main sections: the busy downtown stretch between Erzsébet tér and Oktogon is dominated by luxury brands, the Opera and the Paris Department Store, now an entertainment venue and elegant café. Nearby, immediately off Andrássy, Nagymező utca and Liszt Ferenc tér provide a cultural backdrop of theatres, photo galleries and Budapest’s prime concert hall for classical music. From Oktogon to Kodály körönd, the avenue is expanded by a service road and a tree-lined walkway on each side. Here, you’ll find the House of Terror, a unique museum mainly focused on the horrendous aftermath of incarceration and torture after the 1956 Uprising, in the building where it all took place. On a lighter note, nearby stand museums dedicated to Franz Liszt and, by the rond-point named after him, Zoltán Kodály, in houses where each composer lived. Between Kodály körönd and Heroes’ Square, the architectural tone changes from scenic to stately. The Russian, South Korean, Bulgarian, Turkish, Serbian and Albanian governments all prefer to be represented here rather than around the upscale residential districts of Buda, while cultural institutions tend to be niche – the East-Asian art collection of Oriental voyager Ferenc Hopp, the KOGART Gallery, the MagNet Community Center – rather than draw hordes of visitors. The Serbian, former Yugoslav, Embassy has a footnote in Hungarian history books as it was here that the deposed hero of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, Imre Nagy, sought sanctuary from Soviet forces. His stay barely lasted three weeks.

At the gateway to the Palace Quarter, the Szabó Ervin Library (Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könyvtár – FSZEK) stands close to Kálvin tér in District VIII. Housed in the Neo-Baroque Wenckheim Palace built in 1889, it has been functioning as a library since 1931. As well as an architectural landmark, it’s a popular place for students, professors and academics to spend many a rainy afternoon amid its huge historical halls and in its cosy armchairs.

A perfect spot for a romantic rendezvous, the Tomb of Gül Baba is surrounded by beautiful gardens, recently renovated and reopened. The landmark honours Gül Baba, an Ottoman-era poet and philosopher who died shortly after the Turkish conquest of Buda. From his statue, a panoramic view stretches all the way to the Danube. The walkways up to the site, near the Buda foot of Margaret Bridge, have also been revamped.

Vajdahunyad Castle was built in Városliget in 1908. Basing his design on the classic Transylvanian Gothic model, Ignác Alpár created it for the millennial celebrations of 1896 with the goal of embodying 1,000 years of Hungarian architecture. Originally, it was a temporary construction of wood, but it was so popular that it was recreated in stone and brick by 1908. The castle today is home to the Museum of Agriculture. The building stands on an artificial island in the Városliget Lake and is accessible via four bridges. The statue of medieval chronicler Anonymous sits in its interior courtyard.

The capital has a truly cosmopolitan street known as "Budapest's Boradway": Nagymező Street. The street perpendicular to Andrássy Avenue is trimmed by theatres, clubs, and restaurants, and frequented by a colourful crowd. The Operetta Thetare, the Thália Theare and Radnóti are the scenes of varied theatrical performances. For a photo exhibition, head to Mai Manó Ház, and enjoy an elegant bistro lunch at Pesti Disznó. Prefer to eat on the street? Go for the sandwiches of Meat and Sauce or the thin-crust pizza slices of Pizzica.
