Parks & Nature

This is the crown jewel of Buffalo's World Class park system. And we are located about 200 feet from it's once glorious main entrance. It has since been savaged by an expressway, but we are in the process of wrestling it back from the clutches of NYS Department of Transportation! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this park -but watch out for all the third-rate golfers on that third-rate golf course that is taking up the lion's share of the park. https://www.bfloparks.org/

About a 40 minute drive. One of the best local places to hike. The creek is beautiful with a rocky bottom so you can go "creek walking." The park is large (about 300 acres) and strewn with trails, so if you're prone to getting lost in the woods, bring a GPS. http://alltrails.com/trail/us/new-york/hunter-creek

Some good trails scattered about a large collection of wetlands. If you are a birder, this is that place for you. Especially cool on those spring and fall evenings and early mornings when, if you catch the right pond at the right time, you can see tens of thousands of Canada Geese -quite a sight and sound!

It's about a 40 minute drive but well-worth it. The giant sand dunes are amazing. And the largest local beach, Woodlawn, is located next to a sewage treatment plant. Buffalo's storm and sanitary sewers are combined. That means everytime it rains, the plant is overwhelmed and raw sewage is dumped into Lake Erie. It's not as sexy as wars or expressways, but this is certainly some infrastructure that we need to invest in.

This is the supposed home of the Buffalo Wing. The story is that they used to throw the wings away. One day the cook threw them in a deep fry and then covered them with a mixture of Franks Red Hot sauce and melted butter and put them on the bar for customer's to eat for free. They took off and soon people were paying for what was once thought to be garbage. The owners took credit, but making delicious food out of other people's scrapps is the heart of what soul food is. So, I think the credit goes to some unknown East Side cook.

Another historic building with rich ambiance to dine in. Williamsville has a lot of upscale (too upscale for me) shops and some other decent restaurants. There is a pretty cool antique Mall to the east along Main Street and a bunch of smaller shops along the way.

A moody bar and restaurant with decent food, ambiance, and a nice fire place in the winter months. But more importantly, this spot on the map takes you into the Allentown District. Once a bawdy punk rock, arts district, this area is rapidly gentrifying due mainly to the growth and development of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. But her is still much to enjoy of the older scene, if you continue west along Alan Street. A good spot for a short pub crawl.

I've never actually been here, but it is in the heart of the Chippewa nightlife district. It's actually what started the nightlife scene here. Mark Goldman (of the Goldman Sacks family) bought this building with a business partner and restored it. He hoped to spur a nightlife scene based on arts, theater, and music. Well, best laid plans. it became the buffalo meat market nightlife scene. That reputation, however, has faded and there are a variety of eateries, bars, and dance clubs to visit along Chippewa and north along Franklin.. This spot is about a 10 minute drive or an hour walk.
