The Powder Tower is one of the original 13 city gates in Old Town, Prague, Construction began in 1475. The tower was intended to be an attractive entrance into the city, instead of a defensive tower. The foundation stone was placed by Vladislav II. The city council gave Vladislav II the tower as a coronation gift. While it was being built, it was called the New Tower. The look of the tower was inspired by the work of Peter Parler on the Charles Bridge. Vladislav II had to relocate due to riots, so the tower building stopped. He returned in 1485 to live back in Prague Castle, where he lived for the rest of his life, along with the rest of the Kings of Bohemia who lived in Prague.

Kampa (also Na Kampě) is an island in the Vltava river in central Prague on the side of Malá Strana. Charles Bridge crosses its northern tip and is connected to the island by the street ulice Na Kampě. It is separated from Malá Strana by a narrow artificial channel to the west called the Devil's Stream (Čertovka), a waterway dug to power water mills (no longer existent). It is supposedly named after a sharp-tongued woman who lived in a local home called the Seven Devils.

At the core of its collection were items from synagogues that had been demolished as a result of the clearance of the Prague Jewish ghetto. The museum's visitor sites – monuments, permanent exhibitions and the Robert Guttmann Gallery – are open every day except Saturdays and the Jewish holidays.
Located conveniently on the artsy island of Kampa (you can see some of David Černy’s alien babies here, check out the John Lennon Wall, and socialize with local artists at Mlýnská Kavárna), you’ll find Museum Kampa right along the banks of the Vltava. At Museum Kampa they focus on Central European art, as well as house the collections of two icons of 20th century Czech art, František Kupka and Otto Gutfruend. Also on rotation are temporary exhibits of Czech and international artists (past exhibits included the work of Yoko Ono, Piet Mondrian, Theodor Pištěk, and Andy Warhol). Even if you don’t manage to make it inside, sneak a peek at their sculpture garden which is free of charge.
