Best bread in the area! (Also sold at Lorton village shop if you don't leave it too late in the day). Excellent coffee shop behind the bakery (up a nearby alley) that also does great snacks and light meals.

Parks & Nature

A beautiful lake with an easy circular lake shore path (even wheelchair accessible along the far shore). Stunning views all the way around. Finish at the pub or for tea and cake (or ice cream) at Syke Farm! (Usually busier than Loweswater or Crummock Water - but a classic not to be missed if you're in the area).

There's fabulous high level walking to be had all over the Grasmoor fells including Grisedale Pike. You can walk from the door, or make a circuit from Whinlatter. You can also walk over the high fells to Buttermere or Braithwaite and return using the Honister Rambler bus (that runs between Easter and end of October).

There are some lovely walks to be had around Crummock Water: Easy paths could take you along the lake shore, or circling around to include the Kirkstile Inn. (NB. the whole circuit of this lake is 11 miles and can get very wet underfoot in places along the far shore). If you park near Rannerdale Knotts there's a wonderful slowly ascending path up Rannerdale to reach a glorious view over Buttermere from the top. (A more demanding route might take you up onto Rannerdale Knotts by a much steeper route, then walk along the ridge to descend down Rannerdale). At the head of the lake there is an easy path through to Buttermere and good places for a dip if you fancy!

This is a favourite local walking circult of 3-4 miles that can be done on small lanes or across the fields if not muddy! From High Swinside walk down the lane to Hopebeck. From there take the lane to High Lorton (winter route) or turn across the fields to Low Swinside then High Lorton. Here you might detour to the Wheatsheaf pub 10-15 mins off your route, or stop for a cuppa or ice cream at the Lorton Village shop. To return take a small lane to Scales and Swinside End Farm, and return to High Swinside up the 'Lonning' (footpath) or continue higher up the lane to return along the 'Narrow Gated Road'.

Scale Hill offers a stunning view over Crummock Water and is relatively low level and easy to reach from Scale Hill car park or Lanthwaite Green car park. (Ask for details).

This is a great intermediate level walk from Lorton, crossing Hopegill Beck, climbing to an old quarry path, then higher to reach a low saddle between the Dodd and Whiteside. From here you take a path up a broad sloping ridge to the summit of Whiteside for stunning views of the Gasgill Crags, the Lorton valley, Loweswater fells, and north to the Scottish hills. From the summit there are various choices - to go left to the summit of Hopegill Head, or descend steeply overlooking Crummock Water, or to return the way you've come (which is the easiest descent).

This is one of the loveliest walks in the Lorton area - a good path that is never very steep, but climbs steadily from Thackthwaite to the summit of Low Fell where there are "some of the best low level views in the Lake District" (Wainwright) From the summit and just beyond you find yourself looking over Crummock Water to the higher fells beyond, including Great Gable....

There's a wonderful woodland trail on the far side of the lake if you want something short and easy (with bluebells in May); or you can make a circuit on the far side of the lake climbing a steeper bridle path to return above the trees with extensive views - ask me for details!

Shopping

A treasure-trove of wonderful things to look at and maybe buy. Great if you're stuck for a special present! Cockermouth has many small independent shops like this - but most of them don't come up on Airbnb's map - like Banks Ironmongers 2 doors down from Percy Gallery which is a wonderful traditional ironmongers that still sells most things 'by the piece'. (It also has a fascinating museum - great for a rainy day!)
