Extremely peaceful oasis in Athens as well as a cultural attraction. The nature is gorgeous there. It is also fascinating how this Bysantine church was built on the site of mythological rituals performed during the Antiquity. It is also interesting how the monks resisted for centuries even against the Ottomans. I highly recommend it, specially in the summer. (2 euros entrance fee and 15 min from downtown Athens by taxi)

Remarkable architectural feat and large garden built for the Greeks in 2017. As a cutural center, it encompasses the National library and National opera. There are events and concerts planned throughout the year in the gardens. It is also an oasis for Athenians and tourists alike.

Food Scene
Less than 2 min away by foot, there is a great bakery (Baker). Less than 5 min by foot, on the Gyzi square, I recommend Gyro Apo Ton Platano ( great gyro, salads etc and cheap), Kentauros (gyro and check inside by the cashier the great homemade dishes to order). There is also Pizza Vera which delivers pizza and salads in the neighborhood on Nikolaou Dellaporta 4 off the Gyzi square. Further away (10 min), great middle eastern food at Leilimei Taverna, 2 Valtinon street (great Turkish salads and mezze and gyros). All those food options are cheap.

Close to but not as touristy as Plaka or Monasteraki, hang out with the locals in this funky and cheap neighborhood that has good tavernas, bars and nightlife. I like the taverna Mavros Gatos, 7 Navarchou Apostoli, or the tiny Kafeneio Ivis, 10 Ivis, for mezze and ouzo. Make sure you check out the decorated facade of little Kook, 17 Karaiskaki Georgiou.
