Bairro Alto, a neighborhood laid out in 1513, is a place that truly changes from night to day. In daylight this bohemian district is a sleepy place, hungover from the previous night, with not much going on except for the shops down Rua do Norte. When the sun sets a new life begins, with restaurants opening their doors, and crowds showing up to spend their bar-hopping night. The bars are small, forcing everyone to spill out onto the streets and creating a street party atmosphere. Rua da Atalaia, Rua do Diário de Noticias and Rua da Barroca become filled with caipirinha-sipping crowds, most under 40, but mixing different urban tribes, straight and gay.

Food Scene

Go to Lisbon means having to eat a still warm custard tart, sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar in the house Pastéis de Belém, which is serving this sweet Portuguese since 1835. Its pastries have become famous around the country and even the world, known internationally as "Portuguese custard tarts" or "pasteis de nata." "Pastel de Nata" is the name of the very same tart when not made at this shop and sold around the country. They come recommended in every guidebook, which explains the long lines outside the door.

Sightseeing

A climb to the top of the 110 meters from the National Shrine of Cristo Rei is something unique and touching. It is very beautiful to see Lisbon from above, with wonderful views of the April 25 Bridge, Tejo River and of the city in a whole new perspective. In 1936, it was built this monument inspired by the statue of Cristo Redentor existing in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Inspiring for some, symbol of the dictatorship and of obscurantism for others, the monument to Christ leaves no one indifferent. It was inaugurated across the Tagus in 1959, as a way for the Portuguese episcopate to thank God for having spared Lisbon from World War II. The 28 meter-high (90ft) image of Christ stands on a 75 meter-tall pedestal (246ft), and an elevator takes visitors up to the feet of the statue, with the 25 de Abril Bridge standing right below. From the statue or from the terrace across the monument there's a beautiful panoramic view of practically the entire city of Lisbon. To get there you have to take the commuter ferry that departs from Cais do Sodré station to Cacilhas (an 8-minute ride), from where bus 101 departs to the entrance of the monument.

This square, looking up to the castle, is the center of the city’s most multiethnic neighborhood. It’s something of a mini Chinatown, in addition to being a terminal of the famous tram 28. Neglected for several years, it was revived in 2012 as a street food market, with several stalls with terraces now serving the flavors of the neighborhood’s various cultures (Chinese, Indian, African, among others). On weekends it hosts the "Fusion Market," mixing a variety of products, from handicrafts to ethnic and organic foods, often accompanied by live music. A giant dragon, created in 2012 (year of the dragon) using pieces of old cell phones and computers, is found in the middle of the square, as a

Considered the best aquarium in the world by TripAdvisor in 2015 and 2017, the Lisbon Oceanarium promotes proximity to the oceans and its 8000 sea creatures. Among these, rays, coral reefs, sharks and sea otters. An experience not to be missed. Visiting the permanent exhibition is a true exaltation of the senses.
