Shopping

Fantastic on a summers day this colourful market livens up even the dreariest of winter mornings. Every Sunday morning this street of East London terraces becomes a vibrant and bustling market selling flowers and plants. With some interesting little shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants a visit here is a real highlight. The closest tube station is Old Street on the City branch of the Northern Line but the Overground Line from Highbury & Islington runs to Hoxton which is just 5 minutes from the market.

Mainly focussing on high quality and organic food products this is a great place to pick up some special ingredients if you’re planning on eating in tonight. Opposite London Bridge Station it is well placed for exploring the historic riverside region of Southwark with its Cathedral, replica of Francis Drake’s ship, The Golden Hinde and reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and continuing on to Tate Modern and the South Bank.

Not to be confused with, and nowhere near Camden Market, this is a fascinating collection of specialist antique shops in a cobbled street behind the south east end of Upper Street. Some of the shops are only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays whilst others are open every day. Every Sunday it hosts London’s oldest Farmers’ Market.

This collection, in the former home of this renown architect houses a fascinating collection of Soane’s artefacts gathered from around the world as well as English art from the 18 and 19th century. As well as world class galleries like the Tate Modern, Tate London and The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London houses some fantastic smaller galleries, one of which, the Estorick has a renown collection of 20th Century Italian Art. Just beyond H&I station, in a listed and restored Georgian building on Canonbury Square, itself a textbook London square with its own small vineyard of Loire Valley wines and former home to both George Orwell and Evelyn Waugh. Canonbury, which lies to the east of Upper Street, is another area with grand villas which is a delight to explore and some good London pubs like the Marquess or tucked away the Compton Arms which claims to be “London’s only real pub.”

Sightseeing

Despite what you may have heard about London fog, often the skies are clear and blue and the giant wheel of the London Eye affords fantastic views all over the city. Situated on the south bank of the River Thames the area at first looks like a mass of 20th century concrete and railway lines. However these buildings are home to the Royal National Theatre which presents world class theatre in a range of venues, the Royal Festival Hall, one of London’s premier classical music venues and the National Film Theatre which presents a wide range of lesser seen movies and regularly hosts film festivals on various themes. Stroll around these buildings, there are often free concerts and exhibitions. As you walk along with the river on your left you come to the iconic OXO tower, Gabriel’s Wharf, an arty enclave of shops, studios, bars and restaurants, then under Blackfriars Bridge to Tate Modern and Southwark.

If you’d rather keep your feet firmly on the ground while you appreciate the London skyline head for Hampstead Heath. This is a huge ancient area of parkland covering 320Ha (nearly 800 acres) on hillside to the north of London. Parliament Hill affords panoramic views from the modern skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and the Olympic venues in the east to the City of London, the city centre to Westminster in the west. Hampstead and Highgate villages on either side of the park are two of London’s finest and most expensive areas of real estate and have a wide range of luxury boutiques. The Flask in Highgate does good food and Fullers London beers in an olde worlde setting with a listed bar, though it can be very busy particularly at Sunday lunchtime.

Drinks & Nightlife

www.kingsheadtheatre.com 0207 478 0160, half way down Upper Street is internationally famous and is an Islington institution. A good selection of well kept British ales is a pre-requisite – as well as continental beers and wines and spirits of course. The décor is that of a traditional London pub, until very recently the old cash machine was still in use when staff had to mentally convert prices into “old money” the system abandoned 40 years ago when a pound consisted of 20 shillings, each with 12 pennies in – and there were half pennies as well. Now it just serves as an ornament. Later in the evening live bands often perform in the bar. But the theatre is the jewel of this gem, seating just a couple of hundred people it produces a wide range of acclaimed performances and even has its own opera company.
