Food Scene

Geylang Serai lies on east coast of Singapore and is home to the Malay community. Being the original inhabitants of Singapore, the Malays have managed to keep their culture alive and vibrant. This is very noticeable in the goods and food at restaurants and shops in Geylang Serai. There are charming and colourful historical buildings which are protected from redevelopment in nearby areas such as on Joo Chiat and Katong Road. Geylang is also known as a round-the-clock food destination with dim-sum outlets as well as food stalls selling various exotic items such as pig’s brain soup and frog’s leg porridge. Of course, this area is also renowned as a red-light district (check out road number eight to about number 20 if you are curious) but it is certainly not the only one in Singapore – not many people know, but Singapore actually has no less than six red-light districts. Interesting places to see in Geylang include the Malay Village and Geylang Serai Market as well as Joo Chiat Street.

This shop locate at geylang lor 19, it was extended from existing 1 shop house to 3. It is main dishes is live frog with porridge, I tried different favorites like gong bao, ginger & scallion, and chicken essence of edible frog. The gong bao and ginger & scallion both are made from sugar black sauce, but gong bao is spicy and ginger & scallion is sweet. Both sauce require mix with white porridge for better taste, this sauce taste basically will cover taste of frog, frog meat merely provide slide and softy mouth-feel. I personally like gong bao favorite, it is taste like spicy & sweet and make me body heating and sweating. I recommend you bring a pack of wet tissue. The chicken essence need add on SGD5, it is like chicken soup and frog meat slightly sweet and softy, if soup mix with porridge, I feel taste will be too light for me. If I drink it like a chicken soup still not bad. Hygiene and environment still consider average, I don't feel dirty from table and floor. It is transitional open air shop house, but there is an issue. There too many tissue seller, It's some 30s year old women constantly asking me when I'm eating.

This is the original no signboard seafood nested in a neighbourhood, far away from the tourist area. It is the original creator of the white pepper crab. It has mostly outdoor seating in a very down to earth setting. The white pepper crab looks like the normal ginger green onion crab but it is actually really spicy. The crab is really fresh and meaty! The crispy cereal beancurd and bitter melon fish are great too.

Joo Chiat is named after a milliner, Chew Joo Chiat, and is one of the most interesting areas on the island. Joo Chiat Street reminds visitors of the rich history of the city-state. The historical and scenic Peranakan (Straits Chinese) shophouses and buildings are not only beautiful but are also very clever works of art styled in a mixture of early 20th century local and colonial designs. Opening Hours: 24 hours daily Location: The eastern part of Singapore

Geylang is a multicultural haven, and it’s not unusual to see churches, mosques and temples on the same street. Those in search of a tranquil retreat should head to the Foo Hai Ch’an Monastery. Founded in 1935, the monastery is a serene oasis, complete with bonsai trees, gongs and intricate Buddha statues. Just next door is the 19th century Hindu Sri Sivan Temple, which was moved to the area from Orchard Road in 1983.
