Founded in 1860, the zoo also has a free-flight rainforest hall with free-ranging birds and reptiles and a large elephant park. Cologne's Botanical Garden "Flora" is located adjacent to the zoo and is open daily without charge. The botanical garden cultivates nearly 10000 types of plants. About 5000 species are presented in four exhibition greenhouses.
