Sapelo Island is a barrier island given to freed slaves after the Civil War. Tours of the Island are available. Also on the island is the Historic Reynolds Plantation, former home of RJ Reynolds and the University of Georgia Marine Research operation.

The visitor's center at the mainland ferry dock has an excellent small museum on the Island's interesting history, including the R.J. Reynolds Wildlife Management Area, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion, the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Area, and the Island's beautiful beaches. I conduct private tours of the Island seven days a week on airbnb experiences, Darien, GA, USA.

The visitors center is at the same location where you will take the ferry to Sapelo Island. Plan time to visit the center before boarding the ferry. You'll learn a lot about the island its people, history and culture.
