Woodstock Tower Trail via Wagon Road is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Woodstock, VA (about 14 miles from cottage). It offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round . Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Elevation: 541 feet

Best view of the Valley, seriously! Nice 8-minute hike from parking but not difficult or long (there are rough stone steps in several places and some rocks to avoid on the path). The tower is sturdy, just 3 levels to climb but metal stairs are open. We went through the town of New Market then Woodstock so entered the GW National Forest from the west, then drove home via the Ft. Valley way (east side); lovely views both way. On the Woodstock side, don't miss the Seven Bends State Park -- great spot to pause for lunch and some wading!

(17 min away)"The hike up to Woodstock Tower is an easy 2.0 mile out/back walk suitable for most people, and the 360° panoramic view from the top of the tower is one of the best in the Massanutten range. On a clear day you can see south towards Harrisonburg and the town of Woodstock just across the other side of the south fork of the Shenandoah River. The views west are of the north fork of the Shenandoah River, and to the east you look back through Woodstock Gap to the Shenandoah National Park. If you're hiking with very young children, or hikers who are just starting out and may not be in the best shape yet, you can also park on the ridge at the pink blazed Tower Trail, which makes for a very easy 10 minute walk to the tower with no elevation gain. Note: Tower Rd from VA758 is closed in the winter."
