Free beach, and where the river mouth meets the ocean. Every changing tides, so not great for swimming but beautiful at low tide for a walk. Close to ojochal. Great place to buy fish

Playa Tortuga is in Ojochal, about an hour drive North of Finca Bellavista. This beach is home to a non-profit biological research and education center formed in 2009 by community members (“citizen scientists”) and Costa Rican scientists. Turtle nesting season is July-December. Most nests are moved to the Reserve’s protected nursery/hatchery (due to poaching threats) where staff and volunteers monitor and observe them. If you will be visiting during turtle season and are interested in this project, we encourage you to follow "Reserva Playa Tortuga" on Facebook. They will make announcements when they have baby turtles ready to hatch, and they invite anyone to come witness the hatching and cheer on the little guys as they make their way out of the nest and into the sea.

Deeply impacted by a hurricane many years ago, this beach is not at all on the tourist map. It’s worth a stop if you are interested in the diversity of the coastline as you can get a view of Boca Coronado, where the Terraba-Sierpe wetlands start. I have heard that there are caves that you can reach at low tide (maybe ask around). The beach is named for the sea turtles that nest here. If you’re in the area for a while and looking to volunteer to help the turtles, Reserva Playa Tortuga, based at this beach, is the place to do it.
