Located in the heart of Empordà, the town of Begur and its beaches are one of the most wonderful spots on the Costa Brava. The town boundary takes in the impressive hills of the Begur Massif and an extensive coastline washed by the Mediterranean sea. Begur’s old town, home to numerous monuments left as legacies of significant moments in the town’s history, together with its eight coves and small beaches, and the Romanesque centre of the village of Esclanyà, make it and its peerless natural surroundings an unbeatable place to visit. Begur is a town with a deep vein of history. Beneath the shelter of its medieval castle, herdsmen, fishermen, emigrants returning from the Americas and bottle cork manufacturers have lit up the pages of the town’s history; a history reflected in every street, house and corner. Begur is without doubt best-known for the image of its medieval castle presiding over the town, but you can also find other interesting places to visit, such as the numerous “cases indianes”, the 16th-century defence towers, the church (a building in the Gothic style), and other historic buildings such as the Casino Cultural (Cultural Centre) and the Escoles Velles (Old Schools). The village of Esclanyà, falling within Begur’s town boundary, is especially interesting for its quiet, Romanesque centre, of which the small Church of Saint Stephen and the Castle (a 14th-century building of which only the grand, rectangular tower remains) are particularly worthy of mention.

A very important town in the Costa Brava, with a nice historical center and some modernist buildings. It's 1 h 45 min away from Barcelona by car.

Begur is one of the prettiest medieval towns on the Costa Brava. Amid the winding, cobbled streets, with their Moorish and colonial townhouses, are classy, quirky boutiques, bars and restaurants, as well as lovely plazas. It’s a steepish climb up to the crumbling castle but the views over the surrounding countryside and coast are spectacular.
