The Venetian walls are an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 6 km that go around the Upper Town represent an extraordinary defense system built by the Venetians in 1561 (on ancient Roman walls) to defend against external attacks. Having never undergone any siege, they are perfectly preserved. Although a little tiring, they are an itinerary not to be missed during a visit to Bergamo. Along the walls there are 4 entrance doors to the Upper Town and there are 14 bulwarks, 2 platforms, 100 openings for guns.

The walls of Bergamo, one of the most famous fortifications built by Venice, constituted the Republic’s westernmost defence system, while the fortress of Famagusta, on the island of Cyprus, was the Venetian outpost located farthest to the east. Never used for military purposes, from the nineteenth century the walls became a privileged site for taking a stroll, after the bastions and battlements were converted into a park.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE The defensive walls, 6km and 200m long, were built by the Republic of Venice between 1561 and 1588 (although initially it was expected to be terminated in a year). They protect the hilly part of the city, which has since been called Bergamo Alta, and despite the underground, the military passages, the 200 gullies and the cannons (two of which are still to be visited) have never had to face sieges.

Le mura venete di Bergamo sono un'imponente costruzione architettonica risalente al XVI secolo, ben conservate non avendo subito, nei secoli, nessun evento bellico.
