Hallingdal Museum is an open-air museum. It´s one of the oldest in Norway, with 30 historical buildings and approx. 30,000 objects from the entire Hallingdals region. The legendary "Staveloftet" from Ål was built around year 1340 and is today one of the country's best preserved wooden houses from the Middle Ages. Through various events, theme days and exhibitions, the museum facilitates experiences and knowledge. In addition, the museum is open mostly throughout the year, and visitors can enter many of the historical buildings and read about their stories. In the Tandberg building you can experience a war exhibition from the national front 1940-1945. In the reception building you can also visit the regular exhibitions. Every Wednesday from the fist of July to the beginning of August, visitors can watch end try out old handicraft traditions. The old grocery store is open and offers a varied selection of traditional goods. The museum also offers changing exhibitions, a costume exhibition, activity days, story-telling theatre and the activity area “energy sources in old rural societies”. There is also a small log-driving station where children accompanied by adults can drive small logs down “the river”.

Museet fra 1899 er blant de eldste friluftsmuseene i Norge og fylt med spennede historier og har mange arrangementer i sommerhalvåret. På museumsområdet nær fossene i Rukkedøla finnes det 29 antikvariske bygninger og 30.000 gjenstander som representerer hele regionen. "Staveloftet" fra Ål ble bygd rundt 1330 og er i dag et av landets best bevarte trehus fra middelalderen.
