One of the largest and most important castles, both historically and architecturally. Most of the principal buildings of the castle date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. A few structures of the fourteenth century remain, while the outer defences fronting the town date from the early eighteenth century.
The Castle's long, turbulent history is associated with great figures from Scotland’s past such as William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots.
There is a lot to see: the Royal Chambers, Great Hall, Old Kitchens, the Tapestry Studio..... There is a good café.

The most southerly of the Munros (a mountain over 3 000 ft / 914m). There are superb views across the loch and mountains – on a clear day. The walk up and down takes 4-5 hours. A fair level of fitness and good footwear and clothing is required and the path should be followed. Check the forecast.

A tiny hill of only 465 feet / 142m but from the top there is a fantastic view across Loch Lomond and its islands - good for sunrise/sunset.
