Feel like taking a walk? Head to the Westerpark and walk towards the city centre through an interesting mix of parks and former industrial sites. Depending on the season you can even dive into a tiny nature reserve that'll leave you wandering among reeds, wondering where the city's gone so suddenly.

The Portugese Synagogue is a beautiful 17th-century remnant of the culture of the many Sephardic Jews who settled in the Dutch Republic after they were expelled from Portugal and Spain in the late 15th century.

One of the most remarkable buildings designed by Amsterdam School-style architect Michel de Klerk: 'the Ship' in the Spaarndammerbuurt. It's lately been restored to its original splendor as a social housing complex. The museum housed in the complex offers a great introduction to the story of the Amsterdam School and social housing projects in Amsterdam. Afterwards, find your food or drinks in one of the bars on the Spaarndammerstraat.

Sightseeing

Built in 1913-15, the Scheepvaarthuis is often regarded as the first building designed in the style of the Amsterdam School. This Art Deco-ish style drew on the examples from Art Nouveau and the Glasgow architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The hotel that currently occupies this former joint office of multiple shipping firms has restored the building's grand style. Don't hesitate to go inside.

The old grain silos refurbished as apartments and a modern housing block shaped like a huge stack of shipping containers—the latter designed by the world-famous architects of MVRDV—are pretty cool example of modern architecture in Amsterdam. Duck underneath the modern complex to head up a flight of stairs that leads to a huge platform overlooking the IJ.

Food Scene

Cook is my favorite bar and restaurant in the neighborhood. It's not exactly cheap—about €35/person for three courses and a couple of drinks—but the food and the atmosphere are definitely worth it. It's situated on one of the nicest squares of Amsterdam West, so you might also drop by to enjoy their fine espresso macchiato on a sunny day.

Looking for a nice terrace close by? Buurman and buurman is the place to go. Theirs is a pizza place, but it's also a perfect place to have a beer on a warm summer night, just a five minute walk from the apartment.

Looking for decadent dining in Amsterdam West? De School is pretty damn good. If, after hours of delicately prepared meals, you still feel like dancing: the building also houses a night club that's among the most famous dance clubs in Amsterdam.

Want to get a taste of life in Amsterdam West? Terrasmus, in the Erasmuspark just down the street, is nice place for a coffee and a newspaper on a sunny day. You'll be surrounded by young parents and locals taking a morning off.

As the inner neighborhoods of Amsterdam have gentrified, they have pushed out diversity in favor of formulaic hipsterish stores and bars. Bos and Lommer is still a rather multi-ethnic and diverse neighborhood: the great Turkish food of Bir Tat testifies to that diversity.
