- (on the way to Limoges). Everyone should visit the Martyrs village, which has been left untouched as a memorial since the Nazis slaughtered the innocent inhabitants and then burnt down the whole village during the Second World War. They mistakenly thought it was a stronghold of the French Resistance. Combine with Chasseneuil monument to the Residtence

at the tip of the Gironde estuary is the nearest seaside town and is a must for its long beach at St George’s. For a longer visit (maybe overnight) take a ferry to the Medoc for a visit to such famous wine châteaux as Margaux, Chateau Lafite -Rothschild, Paulliac and many more. Blaye, on the Gironde has a hillside fort, some parts dating back to Roman times, built to guard the approach to Bordeaux. You can also take a ferry to the Medoc to visit the vineyards (see above).

Sarlat la Caneda. Medieval town. Pick up a walking tour of the old town from the Tourist Office, well worth a visit – market day is Friday. Domme. One of the many medieval fortified towns on the high cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley with magnificent views of the river, also has it’s own caves deep in the cliffs. The Vezere Take a drive down the Vezere valley and visit Les Eyzies. Its claim to fame are the prehistoric cave dwellings accessed from the river valley up a quite steep set of steps. And then:- Roque St Christophe, has its underground caves with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. Lascaux. See the famous cave paintings discovered in the 1940’s, visits are now only to duplicate man made caves of the originals (with a new one now opened) , quite incredible. We think that tickets are ONLY available from the tourist office in Montignac, but check the website first. Villars, underground caves with some paintings and stalagmites and stalactites.

Visit the famous vineyards of the Pomerol including the famous Chateau Petrus and St Emilion - also a very interesting medieval hill town, before travelling on to Bordeaux on the banks of the Garonne. The Tourist Information office has guided walking tours round the Old Town of Bordeaux, about one and half hours. Once a possession of England, Bordeaux is steeped in history and is well worth a visit. Take the TGV from Angouleme to Paris or Bordeaux for the day.
