Built in the late 11th Century by William de Warenne The first Earl of Surrey. The castle has amazing views over the town. It also has an adjoining museum so you can find out all about the incredible history of Lewes, the battle of Lewes and the story of how the famous bonfire night celebrations came to be.

Anne was one of the lucky women to survive being married to Henry VIII. The story is that he did not find her attractive after marrying her for political reasons and seeing a portrait of her before he met her. He said “She is nothing so fair as she hath been reported”. How rude. But Anne was clearly a clever woman, as she remained friends with the King, and got this house as well as Hever Castle nearby in the divorce settlement (the marriage was actually annulled) Henry would go in to refer to her as ‘The King’s beloved sister’ She never lived at the house but it provided her with an income from rental. Today it is a really fascinating example of 15 Century architecture and is decorated just as it would have been in Tudor times. In the summer they hold costumed days and various events, as well as a Tudor tea tent in the garden. Well worth a visit and only a 10 minute walk from the cottage. After you have visited, cross the road and visit Lewes Priory in the fields opposite.

Beautiful ruins of an historically important Priory that housed Cluniac monks. In its heyday it was one of the wealthiest monasteries in England. Founded in the 11th century by William de Warenne and his wife Gundrada between 1078 and 1082, on the site of a Saxon church dedicated to St Pancras. The main church was huge, with a nave of 432 feet, making it larger than Chichester cathedral. The monastery was destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. It also took a great deal of damage when in 1847 someone decided to build the railway right through the site. It is now a grade 1 listed monument. The priory has a herb garden, kitchen garden and an apple orchard, all re-instated by a dedicated group of volunteers. You can even see the remains of the monks' toilet, and give thanks for modern plumbing (and privacy!) Do have a look at the Lewes priory website before you go as there is a wealth of fascinating information, including the treasures found at the site, most of which now reside in the British Museum (although there are some interesting unusual cat head stone gargoyles which I understand are re-located to the church at Kingston) Lewes Priory is really near to Anne of Cleves house so it is possible to do both sites in the one visit. There is a small play park for kids adjoining the site.

Grade 2 listed historic house built in 1572. Now owned by Lewes council. The house stands in a beautiful and well loved garden, which is well worth a visit. Sadly you cannot go into the house unless attending a wedding or going about council business. The gardens are stunning and also the home of the Sussex Guild of craftsmen and women. Their shop is here, and it really is worth a wander to check out the skills and creativity of the Guild members. There is also a tea hatch where you can get tea/coffee/cake. Sit on a bench and feed the abundant squirrels. Very popular with locals and you will find half of Lewes lazed about on the grass come summer. 2 minutes walk down the road from the cottage.

Lewes's fab and truly independent cinema. Great food and wine list, and THE place to check out that obscure Japanese black and white documentary about that death metal band you have been meaning to catch. Check them out online for the full programme of films and events. Great fun place to hang out before or after a film and watch the world go by. In the summer months they have themed evenings with a food truck and music on the lawn out front.

Community, arts and youth centre just moments from the cottage. Great things happen here. Lewes Film club, Lewes speakers festival, Lewes writing workshop, tango lessons, the Lewes circus society, as well as the odd Jumble sale and art exhibition. There is a notice board outside which usually has details of what is coming up. Also worth a look in the churchyard at the ancient graves. The original church on the site was first mentioned in 1148.

Home and studio of the painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant. Charleston was a gathering point for some of the 20th century's most radical artists, writers and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group. The house and garden are not to be missed. They also run a full programme of events, exhibitions and a festival from 17-29 May. Plus a lovely cafe run by Caccia & Tails. Stunning location, a great shop and gallery. Walk from here to Firle. The footpath takes you past the imposing Firle Place. Good food in Firle at the Ram Inn.

Sports/Walking/Swimming

Home of the amazing community owned Lewes FC. The club has been playing at the Dripping Pan for over 135 Years. The ground was recently voted No 1 in the 'British Footballs Greatest Grounds' book. The club made history in 2017 by becoming the first (and shamefully) only club side in the world to have equal playing budgets for Women and Men. The same pitch, same training facilities and same wages for players. This fact is worth the visit alone. Check the Lewes FC website for match timetables and more info.

Cool outdoor pool in a lovely park near to the centre of town. Built in 1860, it is the oldest freshwater outdoor swimming pool in the UK. The pool is a lovely place to hang out in the summer, but be warned the water is cold. There is a grassy area and a small tea/snack shop. Take a picnic and a blanket, and spend the day, although in the summer months it does get quite busy, so check the website and book your slot before setting out. Occasionally the WI pop up there with a cake stall which is excellent. They also run midnight swims and various events in the evenings, so it is worth following them on social media to get the latest news.

Lovely historic pub in the village of Kingston. This is a really lovely circular walk to the pub and back, around 3 miles in total. Great pub garden for the summer months. From the cottage, Walk to the railway station and on past it to the mini roundabout. Turn right to walk down Southover street. Walk past the church on its raised pavement and take the turning on your left just past it. (Cockshut road) Walk down under one low rail bridge and continue past the car park, curving to your right to go under another larger road bridge. Take the first turning to your right through a gate into some playing fields. Continue across the fields keeping to your left heading to the river. Cross the river by the bridge and walk along the path heading right (the river will be on your right) after 10 mins or so you will eventually come to a crossing of paths and a track leading diagonally left across a field to a style/gate in a hedge between fields. follow the path to the gate and then take a longer path diagonally across the following field. Reach a track dissecting your path and turn right up to the main road (the garden centre will be at your left) Cross the road and walk into the village of Kingston. Pass the school and keep going until you see a left hand turn with the pub (the Juggs) just a short way up the left hand turn. Eat, drink and be merry. but not too merry as you have to walk home. After leaving the pub, continue up and out of the village until you reach a wide path that crosses the road. Marked Kingston Ridge. Take the right hand path up a slight incline and past some houses on your right and a windmill on your left. Continue on the path as it widens out along the ridge and make sure you look back at the marvellous view of the downs. Cross the fields and continue onto a gravel path through some trees and out onto a small road. continue along the road and follow it as it goes down a steep hill and across a bridge over the motorway. Keep on down the road and eventually you will end up back at the top of Southover street. There is another great pub here called The Swan should you feel the urge for another lager shandy. Continue along Southover Street and past Anne of Cleves house on your left, finally reaching the station and the cottage just beyond.

No trip to Brighton is complete without a visit to the former home of the Prince Regent who went on the become King George IV. Prepare to be dazzled by the domes, minarets and dragons decorating every surface. English Royal taste gone absolutely bonkers by the sea. George had a high old time living it up in Brighton, and this was his party palace. Now expertly and meticulously preserved by the talented in-house conservation team, it is a true Regency marvel. Visit Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, which is located just across the beautiful gardens (a popular spot for a picnic and people watching) The Museum has a wealth of interesting exhibits, as well as world class exhibitions and some top notch art.

Great little craft brewery who put on events at their taproom just outside of Lewes (a short walk) They use ingredients from the surrounding south downs and they do a street-food canteen with various invited food trucks which is open Fridays (5-11pm) and Saturdays (12-11pm) Definitely a place to find the hipsters of Lewes. but hipsters here range in age from 8-80 so there is usually a good mix.
