Whether or not you like snow sports, it's worth taking a ride up Cannon's historic tram to the summit. This option is available year-round; non-skiers can ride up and down to get a glimpse of some of Cannon's iconic ski trails. In the summer, you can take a short walk to the top of the observatory and see all the way to Canada on a clear day. We've seen bears on the ski trails in summer time. The pub at the top is open year-round for the highest altitude beer in New Hampshire (4,080 feet).

This is a great hiking trail for all abilities. Long, flat, and parallel to a river most of the way. There are several options once you get there. Small fee for parking & dogs need to be leashed. Rangers there are very friendly and helpful.

Moderate hike up to the gorge, where in the winter you may see some ice climbers. Micro-spikes are helpful in the winter (or show shoes if it just snowed).

AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch
U.S. 302This is a great jumping-off point for several hiking trails and an impressive visitor center where the rangers can offer hiking tips and provide maps. There is a playground area for kids and they serve modest, inexpensive meals there cafeteria-style. You can also stay overnight in the lodge (though it's not as fun as staying in the Happy Place).
This is a moderate hike to a lake with an AMC hut. You can continue on from here to summit Cannon, or turn around. The AMC hut offers bathrooms, water, and snacks for purchase. Lots of kids on the trail. Park at the campground or in parking lot near trailhead. Can be crowded.

Along the way, there are many well-marked scenic overlooks where the views are stunning year-round, but particularly during the fall foliage. Take care in the winter, although NH generally does a great job treating roadways.
This is a must-do for families with young kids who enjoy old-fashioned amusements. Great to combine with a scenic drive along the Kanc. They have recently started Adult Night which we've heard can be a lot of fun for the grown-ups.

I think there is a small discount if you pre-buy tickets online. Pay attention to their website - it doesn't usually open until after Christmas, but it's entirely dependent on the temperatures.

There is a large network of hiking trails right in Alpine Village - just walk out the front door.
Highly recommend the "troll" hike, which is about a 2-mile loop where somebody has hidden troll figures in rock crevices, near tree stumps, etc. Great place to take a dog off-leash. You enter it via guest parking across from Unit 63. The path starts by going over the fallen tree and then following the river (don't cross it) until you start to see orange blazes, then follow them.
There are a series of trails accessible from behind the cul-de-sac on Madison Dr. They are marked with blue blazes until you reach the numbered snow mobile trails.

Worth the 25-minute drive north. Schilling makes a range of beers and their wood-fired pizza is the best around. The building is an old mill that extends over the river. They have a lot of outdoor seating, even in winter, with portable heaters and fire pits and a couple of igloos.
