Parks & Nature

This is one of the most dramatic, spectacular viewpoints into the Grose Valley. Because it's a bit off the beaten track it's usually pretty quiet - a good place to contemplate the big questions. Nice sunrise spot :)

This trail was recently upgraded by National Parks and now features beautiful sandstone steps through most of the trail. It takes you through dry sclerophyll forest, hanging swamps, waterfalls, along a pretty, mossy creek bed and then out past breathtaking views over the Grose. If it's a hot day and you're feeling adventurous you can walk up the creek and into the bottom of the stunning Grand Canyon itself. This is an awesome walk that has a bit of everything.

They call Blackheath the Rhododendron Town and this is where you can go to find out why. They grow beautifully in the cool mountain climate and this park is a pretty lovely place to walk around and take it all in

One of the most iconic views in Blackheath - Hanging Rock, overlooking the Grose Valley. It's about a 11km return walk along a fire trail. Worth the effort.

A pretty little trail that weaves back and forth along a creek bed, taking in hanging swamp, and ferny, mossy views before connecting with the Cliff Top track at the Grose Valley. It's a great trail, mostly flat but a bit rough and slippery. It makes a nice trail run.

Another moderate loop that follows a creek that flows into the Grose Valley. Depending on the water level there might be some spots where you can go for a quick dip in the heat. Spectacular views and a short uphill slog at the end.

This stellar trail links some of the most popular lookouts in Blackheath, following the ridge top with plenty of spots to stop and take in the view along the way. A favourite for trail running locals.

Drinks & Nightlife 🍻

This is a classic, grungy Blueys pub with a sweet old school dining room. You'll find free live jazz or honky tonk on Sunday afternoons, and sometimes randomly during the week. Occupied either by barflies, old timers or completely deserted, it's a pretty nice place for a drink or a pub meal. If you're on a budget see if you can order a pie at the bar. They're cheap and cheerful but they sell out fast.

Slightly more up-market than the Ivanhoe, the Gardeners has some nice couches, warm fires in the winter and a good menu. They also host the awesome (and free - for now) Open Mic on the first Sunday of the month. Super cool.

Cafes and Bakeries ☕️

The original and the best. These guys do good pies and bread (probably other things too, but this is what I usually go for) and are usually super busy on the weekend. Go early.

Very popular with climbers, budget friendly and a local fixture. This is a great place to stock up on baked goods for your adventure. Check out the squashy rhubarb cake and brown rice pastie.

Good coffee. Great GF charcoal bread. Cute location off the main drag in an arcade.

Good coffee. So many varieties - this is the spot for coffee connoisseurs. Nice simple menu, good prices. Off the main drag - can be quiet when people are queueing for other cafes.

Sightseeing

The Megalong is a great place to go exploring. The drive down takes a steep and winding road through sheltered temperate rainforest that gives way to beautiful views back up to the escarpment. In the valley there are lovely vineyards, wineries (at least one), tea houses and spots to stop and swim.

This is a point of interest for history buffs, as it marks the point of descent on the first European crossing of the Blue Mountains. There are some interesting interpretive signs that explain some of the markings you'll see on the trail. Nowadays Mt York is popular with abseilers and climbers due to the extensive sandstone cliffs with a range of aspects. At Mt York you'll also see beautiful views out west over Hartley towards Lithgow. (Stop at Bardens Lookout on the left as you drive out for more views).
