Squeezed between the two main railway stations, Termini and Tiburtina, it was the district of the proletariat and young people, a cultural and art laboratory. One of the most POP neighborhoods in Rome with art and design studios, craft workshops, clubs, aperitifs, young people and restaurants: the cultural navel of Rome. Framed by the Aurelian Walls, San Lorenzo opens from Porta San Lorenzo, the monumental arch built by Augustus in the fifth century. A.C., and entering the district, leaving behind the Parco dei Caduti of 19 July 1943, among the typical buildings of the POP building, in this triangle of streets the recovery of industrial architecture has given life to a real cultural center of San Lorenzo. Wandering around three shops, vintage shops and artisan workshops we stop for a stop at Bar Marani for a coffee under the pergola. This is the center of life in the neighborhood, the market is held every day in the adjoining "piazzetta" and in the evening we meet in front of the Church of the Immaculate Conception or the Tibur cinema. Here once Pasolini and Moravia sat at the tables of the Pommidoro restaurant. Between the famous Verano Monumental Cemetery, between tombstones of famous personalities and the Basilica of San Lorenzo, between the largest university in Europe and Villa Mercede San Lorenzo, it is a neighborhood in constant cultural ferment

San Lorenzo is an urban zone in Rome, Italy. Administratively it was part of both Municipio II and Quarter VI Tiburtino. It occupies roughly the two sides of the early stretch of Via Tiburtina, starting from Termini railway station and ending at the Verano area. The latter includes the ancient basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, which the district takes its name from. Originally a working-class neighbourhood (its inhabitants were mostly workers of the Wuehrer Brewery and the freight yard), it has been a popular, left-oriented area. During World War II San Lorenzo was heavily bombed by Allied planes (on 1943-07-19); the only massive bombing of Rome during the war (though not the only air raid on the city), it aimed at disrupting the railway communication pivoting on the nearby huge freight yard; however, it caused also extensive damage to the buildings of the district (including the Policlinico Umberto I and the basilica itself) and killing some 1,500 people. Maria Montessori's first 3-6 age program was started in San Lorenzo in 1907. Today San Lorenzo, due to the vicinity of the La Sapienza University, is increasingly assuming the character of a student and young artist district. Every evening, hundreds of young people descend on the area, much to the chagrin and protests of the inhabitants of the area. Pizzerias, bookshops, boutiques and other modern places are subsequently replacing the old popular workshops and small markets.

Ubicato tra le stazioni ferroviarie di Termini e Tiburtina, il quartiere San Lorenzo è il rione dell'Università romana La Sapienza, non a caso è abitato e frequentato soprattutto da giovani studenti. Decorato da diversi polmoni verdi, San Lorenzo è un quartiere popolare ricco di pub, ristoranti, birrerie e pizzerie. San Lorenzo, anticonformista per antonomasia, con la sua veracità e con la sua autenticità narra alla perfezione gli aspetti più popolari della Città Capitolina. Ricco di testimonianze del passato, il quartiere San Lorenzo squarcia il velo della città moderna mostrando tra le sue vie e i suoi vicoli la storia antica di un impero glorioso. A raccontare la sua storia non sono solamente le belle ville che danno forma e le Terme di Diocleziano, a narrarla sono anche le Mura Aureliane, la Porta Tiburtina e la Basilica di San Lorenzo Fuori Le Mura, una delle chiese più antiche di Roma. Risalente al IV secolo a.C, il monumento è sopravvissuto al bombardamento alleato subito dal quartiere durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Oltre la bellezza del mondo classico disseminata in tutta l'area, il quartiere San Lorenzo è il rione rosso degli enormi palazzi proletari, gli stessi che nei primi anni del Novecento erano dimora dei ferrovieri. Un quartiere sfaccettato, abbellito da artistici murales, ricco di piccoli negozi vintage e di interessanti botteghe artigiane. San Lorenzo è anche il quartiere delle caffetterie stravaganti, della casa della Memoria dell’Anpi e del Parco ai Caduti 1943. A San Lorenzo l'arte è di casa, qui l'antica fabbrica del Pastificio Cerere e quella delle Vetrerie Sciarra ospitano un notevole centro d’arte contemporanea, collegato alla Facoltà di Scienze Umanistiche. Un vero e proprio puzzle, il quartiere San Lorenzo è la sintesi della Roma più autentica. Questa porzione della Città Eterna, puntellata di edifici rifiniti con stucchi e intonaci di pregio e arricchiti di particolari decorativi di reminiscenza neoclassica, in via dei Ramni, è altresì abbellita da villini in stile Coppedè. Non è tutto, perché San Lorenzo è anche il quartiere del Nuovo Cinema Palazzo, un vecchio edificio che nel 2011 venne occupato da artisti, abitanti del quartiere e operatori culturali, che ne impedirono la trasformazione in un casinò. Da quel momento in poi lo spazio divenne un laboratorio artistico permanente, che vanta un'interessante proposta culturale. Ogni giorno al Nuovo Cinema Palazzo vengono organizzati seminari, spettacoli teatrali, proiezioni cinematografiche e concerti. Imperdibile una sosta al Bar Marani, il locale si trova in via dei Volsci, vicino alle Mura Aureliane. Con la sua atmosfera anni Settanta, il bar è famoso per il suo eccezionale gelato artigianale.

Pizzerie, bar e negozi, molti dei quali in vecchie fabbriche, caratterizzano le strade ricche di murales del quartiere San Lorenzo. Un quartiere giovane, ben servito e ricco di arte. È ricco di vivaci locali notturni, vengono frequentati dagli studenti dell'università La Sapienza di Roma. Il quartiere prende il nome dalla basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le mura, luogo di sepoltura di santi e papi.
