Works on a 5-course set menu (don’t worry, the portions are small) and provides modernist cuisine de auteur at a price which is not cheap, but is modest in relation to the quality: 35€ per person, plus wine. The atmosphere is very relaxed, but all the focus is on the food, so it is not really a place to take children. Boi-Cavalo is a must-visit for foodies – you might be lucky just showing up, but it is safer to book.

One of our favorite restaurants in the city and so close to the apt! Have a wonderful contemporary portuguese dinner for around 50 euros per person. Very well spent money. Book ahead.
Have dinner without fado? Boi Cavalo – R. do Vigário 70 B – phone: +351 21 887 1653 This venue used to be a butcher’s shop, and the old fridges are still there. In the middle of quaint Alfama, Boi Cavalo is a restaurant where no fado is heard – you might even hear some indie rock – and neither fish nor meat is grilled, unless chef Hugo Brito feels like adding it to the week’s menu. Boi-Cavalo is sort of the wild child that stands out from so many similar neighbourhood kids. It is a lab for experiments with unusual Portuguese products, for Asian and other international influences, all devised by a former design student that luckily found his true calling in the kitchen.
