【本岳寺（日蓮宗）】 開創以前の本岳寺は、当時は矢倉門（現祇園町）にあり、聖福寺の末寺に属する禅宗の「本覚寺」というお寺で、「西昌」という僧が住持していました。 History book "Chikuzen fudoki vol.4" said,Hongakuji temple was written "This temple is named Seishouzan and belonged Nichiren sect,Honpouji temple in Kyoto.There is Hasuike in Hakata." Long ago,Hongakuji temple was in Yaguramon(now Gionmachi).This temple belonged Shofukuji temple family,and Zen Buddhist faith.In temple,priest Seisho lived. Priest Seisho was very strong to play Go game(abstract strategy board game for two players) . In August 1496,priest Nichiin(belonged Nichiren sect) came from Kyoto to Hakata.Nichiin and Seisho battled in a Go game by betting temple rights. As a result, Nichiin won,and he got temple rights from Seisho as promised. This temple is only temple to be convert from another sect in many temples in Hakata. Incidentally, Nichiin was told Honinbo Sansa(appointd Go game master by Nobunaga Oda)'s ancestors. Hongakuji temple have owned Buddha painting to have a history of more than 400 years. This painting are now deposited in the Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu. This valuable cultural heritage painting is exhibited across the country.
