It used to be really difficult to get properly authentic Thai food that didn’t pander to the British palate. The arrival of Som Saa means Londoners are now treated to fiery, fragrant cuisine. The service is second to none and inside it feels like a buzzy Thai street market with food served on coloured plastic dishes. Include one of the green papaya salads in your order to balance out the richness of the other dishes.

Originally a pop-up from London Fields given a full-berth here in the heart of Aldgate. Michelin starred chef Andy Oliver crafts authentic Thai tasting grub for the lucky masses. Get there early to avoid a long wait or disappointment.

Som Saa has come a long way since its beginnings in Climpson’s Arch as a Thai pop-up. Now the restaurant is one of the most difficult reservations to secure in the city — largely because of a dedication to the cooking methods and ingredients of authentic Thai cuisine. Whole deep-fried sea bass; smoked aromatic duck soups; seasonal curries; and a hot and heady mix of chillies, herbs and seasonings — it all tells you everything you need to know about the seriousness and skill of chefs Andy Oliver and Mark Dobbie.
