The Pant, or trough, dates back to the 18th century and the hydrant to the 19th century. Both are Grade II listed. The stone square structure has 3 stepped-back stages with a low pyramidal cap. There is a cast iron trough on the east, below a recess for removed spout. Adjacent hydrant on south has fluted shaft with lion mask and gadrooned domed top. The “little man of Acomb” is a very rare style of Roman carving that sits in the grass verge, a few paces from the pant en route to the bridle path. It was probably made during the Roman occupation in the 2nd or 3rd century. The carving is likely of Hercules; he’s holding a club across his chest in one hand and a round object in the other that might be a purse or a dish.
