You'll need a 4 wheel drive with adequate clearance to get in to this beach, but it's worth it!

It can be a hard rough road to drive down but its a nice area where you can often spot monk seals here.

This beach is just north of the airport. You drive over a lava road which can be interesting! It's a great beach with lots of shade. We have seen lots of turtles there too.

*** The south entrance is a 25 minute drive plus 5 minute dirt/lava road, accessibly by any vehicle with caution. You'll want to make a 5-10 minute sandy or rocky walk to get to the more beautiful beach area to the north. The gate locks at 7p, and there are no lifeguards though the surf is often calm. There are a few portable toilets and several trees. If you like airplanes, the airport is just south of this beach and you can see them land and take off there.

Kua Bay for short, one of the most beautiful, blue, pristine waters! The best time to visit is actually early in the morning when the wind is light and the water is calm, making it a pleasant morning swim. NOTE: Be respectful of the Ocean. Many beaches on the Big Island have shore breaks (meaning that the waves crashes on shore and can be very dangerous! People have broken collar bones, ribs, and neck from shore breaks).
