Shinsen-en is a ruins of a Heian period garden just south of Nijo Castle. There is a torii gate at the entrance along Oike Street, but it is a temple belonging to Toji. Here enshrine Ryujin that Kobo daishi who famous monk from the Heian period begged for rain in the pond. In this pond, you can feed ducks and carps. "Oike" on Oike Street is said to be this pond. It is also said to be connected to the pond under the main palace of Yasaka Shrine.

A small temple with a captivating garden. It is very relaxing when visiting there as only locals know this temple. Moreover, it is FREE! My favorite spot in Nijo area. Opens :9am-8pm

Shinsen-en (lit. "Sacred Spring Garden") is the remains of a Heian Period garden just south of Nijo Castle in the west of Kyoto. Shinsen-en is all that now remains of Emperor Kammu's original palace and pleasure garden built from 794, when the capital was moved to Kyoto (Heian-kyo). Shinsen-en is now a sub-temple of Toji Temple in the south of the city below Kyoto Station.
