Tucked away on Governors Island is a charming but deserted WWII-era movie theater left over from when the island was a military base. I used to wander in here as a kid on summer days. The theater has a cute little box office in front, and in its heyday you could see a double feature for $2. It’s not operational, but you can go in at your own risk. Free ferries leave from South Street in Manhattan and from Brooklyn Bridge Park every 30 to 60 minutes.
You need to take the ferry to go to Governor’s Island! This location is seasonal, so they open in the Spring. If you arrive at before 10 entrance is free! And you can also bike ride around the island to see the Statue of Liberty from afar. You won’t be able to get a close up, but you can still see…
For only a $3 ferry ride (which is enjoyable in itself!), you can visit one of the most unique places in New York. Full of history, beautiful scenery and gorgeous architecture, this is a fun sightseeing spot to visit!
Great view of the city and Statue of Liberty. Bike tour around the island is a must. Nice place to experience nyc.
ONLY open May-October, this auto-less island is home to lots of open space, an old fort to wander through, art installations, and events all summer long. A ferry leaves from pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge park just around the corner all weekend long.
