Nice hiking along the river. To find some specific trails, visit alltrails dot com and search for rattlesnake national recreation area in Montana. I can't post a direct link to it here, sorry!

Rattlesnake National Recreation Area Lolo National Forest, Rattlesnake Dr, Missoula, MT 59802 -Dogs on leashes are welcome in almost all areas of this park -Spacious with 61,000 acres of wildness -The Woods Gulch trail loop has no dog restrictions

The Rattlesnake is about 4 miles north of town and is apparently one of the closest designated wilderness areas to an urban area in the US. There are miles and miles of trails for hiking, biking and backpacking. There are 2 trailheads. It's beautiful year round (walking or skiing in winter). You can see nearly any type of wildlife (including bears and mountain lions) in the rattlesnake, but there are also lot of people and lot of mountain bikes.
