Newark Air Museum is a VAQAS registered venue and an Accredited Museum, which is located on the former World War II airfield of Winthorpe in eastern Nottinghamshire. Its diverse collection of more than 90 aircraft and cockpit sections covers the history of aviation, the aircraft on display include 13 (thirteen) National Benchmark aircraft; 34 (thirty-four) Significant aircraft and 21 (twenty-one) Noteworthy aircraft as listed in the National Aviation Heritage Register. The museum is a registered charity (No.256434) that first opened to the public more than forty years ago in April 1973. Over the years its collection has grown to become one of the largest volunteer managed aviation museums in Great Britain. Open 361 days of the year the museum now has extensive under cover displays, including two aircraft display halls that house more than 48 aircraft and helicopters. This means that visitors can find something to see or do whatever the weather. In addition the aircraft the museum displays a diverse display of aviation artefacts and a collection of more than thirty aero engines. On site there is an excellent Café and an extensive Shop, which was once described as “An Aviation Enthusiasts Dream!” Each year the museum organises and hosts a diverse range of Special Event Days, details of which are regularly updated on the museum’s website. This includes the annual Cockpit-Fest event, which attracts visiting displays of aircraft cockpits from across the UK and sometimes Europe; Bi-annual reunion events like Tribute to the V-Force; three times a year it hosts Aeroboot / Aerojumble aviation and avionics sales; and special open cockpit days. Newark Air Museum appeals to a wide range of people, including: retired grand parents and their grandchildren; a lot of families groups; visits from special interest groups; and is also used for reunion events. Education visits are a regular feature in the museum diary and in 2012 the museum was invited to join a new education programme, which is scheduled to run for three years under the guidance of Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire and the arts Council England. As part of this programme the museum offers various facilitated visits, including: The History based World War II / Evacuation offer that focuses on a schoolboy who was evacuated from Sheffield in September 1939; The Science based Principles of Flight activity that explores the forces and simple structure that enable planes to fly: and also the broader topic of aircraft and helicopters as a method of transportation.

Newark Air Museum website. The air museum is located on part of the former World War Two airfield of RAF Winthorpe, close to the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border. Aviation heritage has been at the centre of our historical site for more than forty five years. Our aircraft, helicopters, aeroplanes, aero engines and aviation exhibits are sited partly on leased land next to the Newark Showground and land that we own. Very little remains of the original wartime buildings and what remains of the original runways are no longer fit for us. There is also a cafe on site and various events throughout the year.
