This plaza is between the Jade Museum and the National Museum of Costa Rica. It serves as a prelude to the National Museum of Costa Rica , located in the old Bellavista Barracks, site where the abolition of the Costa Rican army took place on December 1, 1948, an important milestone in Costa Rican history and identity.

The design of the square is by Arq. Edwin Villalta. One of the purposes of its construction was to give a better visual perspective to the West façade of the National Museum.
