This historic college was founded in 1855 as the first interracial, co-ed college in the American south. As one of only 7 work-study colleges in the US, students with high academic potential but low economic means are expected to work on campus in exchange for a tuition-free scholarship. Berea College also has the oldest campus farm with continuous operation since it began. Fruit, vegetables, meat, and eggs are all raised on campus by student workers and available for sale at the Berea College Farm Store. There are several types of tours offered on campus so contact the Visitors Center to schedule.
