For a full 17 centuries continues the saga of Split, since the Roman emperor Diocletian decided to build his palace exactly on the peninsula near the big Roman city Salona, in order to spend his last years in peace. Diocletian palace and the whole old historical city center are part of the UNESCO preserved cultural heritage since 1979 not only because the palace is greatly preserved, but because there is a life going on in the palace in its fullest. In this structure there are visible historical signs of the old Rome, through middle ages till now. Walking through the old city it is possible to travel trough time, there are views of extraordinary examples of ancient architecture like Peristil, medieval Romanic churches, gothic palaces, renaissance portals of noblemen's houses, baroque facades, all the way to modern architecture

Throughout the 17th century, it has been a story about Split since the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build a palace on this peninsula near the great Roman city of Salona, where he would have spent his life in the last years of his life. In these 1700 years the palace slowly became and became a city that today falls rich in tradition, magnificent history, the beauty of natural and cultural heritage. Diocletian's Palace and the entire historical core of Split have been a UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979, not only because of the exceptional preservation of the palace itself, but at least as much as the Palace and its city (or the city and its palace, how nice you are ) continue to

Split is an open air musem where each gate, stone, arch and house tells it’s own story. Its historic centre is situated inside a Roman palace, but isn’t just a pretty seaside attraction: Diocletian’s Palace is a fully-functional high street, home to Split’s leading commercial outlets and the thumping heart of the city’s restaurant and nightlife scenes. Designed to house the noble Emperor Diocletian, and the shackled serfs that served him, the Palace’s shell is spectacularly well-preserved for a Roman ruin, abandoned for several centuries after its construction and the fall of the empire. In the 7th century AD, local refugees fleeing a Croat invasion carved out a life in the trestles and alcoves of the abandoned palace, and it’s been in use ever since. While in Split, act Like in Split: Dalmatians spend an incredibly long time drinking coffee in the sun. Coffee culture is sacrosanct in Dalmatia, and a coffee here doesn’t just mean a quick cup of joe, it’s at least a couple of hours’, or even an entire afternoon’s, commitment. It’s a tradition Croatians treat with a reverence that borderlines on holy. Embrace it. Spend a non-strenuous afternoon sipping frothy kava on a sun-drenched terrace, watching pedestrians threading through Split’s narrow cobbled streets, and acclimatise to the lazier, laid-back Dalmatian pace of life
